Teaching children is a demanding yet very rewarding career and we can help to
get you on the path to teaching. How much do you know about life in the
classroom? It’s certainly hard work and requires a great deal of patience
and understanding, as well as extremely high professional standards. You
will need to be well organised and energetic, a great communicator and be
dedicated to realising the potential of every child you work with. You might
want to teach in primary schools or specialise in a national curriculum subject
in secondary education. You could also consider training as a special needs
teacher. Whoever you want to teach, you will need to progress to university, so
studying this course can lead you to range of degrees to make this
possible.

Access to Education and Teaching - Online
You will be studying a number of units. Some of these are designed to give
you the skills to cope with University level education for example Academic
Writing and Study Support. Some units are related to the teaching professions
such as Child Development and Education professions. You will also study English
Language and Literature. The final unit is Work Experience where you will be
placed in a school-working alongside experienced teachers. This is a valuable
addition to the course that gives you that 'something extra' when you apply to
university for your higher education course. Your tutors will support your
development of reflection and target setting; important aspects of being a
teacher. The course is delivered by highly qualified, experienced teacher
educators with years of experience teaching in modern learning environments and
our students have little Problem in securing their university
place.
You will need GCSE maths, English and science (or a named science like Biology). You will also undertake an assessment of your maths and English skills and will need to demonstrate that you are working at level 2. New requirements for Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) tests prior to university mean you will need to demonstrate strong skills in literacy and numeracy. Experience outside formal education is expected and a commitment to study and a desire to follow a career in teaching/education or a related degree. A DBS check will take place. A criminal record will not automatically bar entry but may do so.
The units are different sizes (called ‘credits’) and to gain the Access to HE Diploma you will need to achieve 60 credits overall, 45 of these must be graded at level 3. Some of the units are simply ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ (known as ungraded units) some of them are graded units. The assessments include;
- Observations of your practice
- Presentations
- Written assignments
- Exams.
We place a very strong emphasis on high levels of attendance and punctuality as the course prepares you for a profession that require these qualities.
You can progress to university to study a range of Degrees that qualify graduates with QTS (qualified teaching status). This allows you to become a teacher in primary and secondary education. Some students may wish to pursue different career paths into education studies and policy.
