Athletics Academy

BMET has had a local Athletics Academy programme for almost 10 years and has established relationships with Birchfield Harriers and Royal Sutton Coldfield AC. This new venture will extend the work and build on the platform that is set to become the Commonwealth Games Athletics venue – The Alexander Stadium.

All Academy 22 scholars will enrol on a Programme of Study which is aligned to their Qualifications on Entry. Scholars will have 10-14 hours of Athletics Specific Training and Competition Prep, combined with Tutorial, Purposeful Work Experience, Maths* or English*  alongside their selected Academic Pathway.

This course develops skills and knowledge by studying a wide range of topics. These will enable the learner to understand key elements and components within the Sport Industry.  On this programme, you can develop your knowledge using examples from specifically the Athletics World but generally across the Sports Industry.

Units that you will study may include:
• Anatomy
• Physiology of fitness
• Sport Psychology
• Sports Nutrition
• Fitness Testing
• Fitness Training
• Assessing Risks
• Sports Analysis
• Technical and Tactical Demands of Sport
• Practical Sport
• Sports Coaching (inclusion of Coaching Assistant / Athletics Leader qual)
• Rules and Regulations in Sport (inclusion of officiating course qual)

To study on the Athletics, Academy Programme, scholars are required to gain 4 GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above which should include Maths and English. Scholars who do not achieve Maths or English will be required to retake whilst on the Programme.

Delivery will be split between James Watt College and the Alexander Stadium. This will normally be in Morning or Afternoon blocks in order to minimise the travel between the college and the stadium. The Programme of study utilises the international

On completion of the Level 3 Subsidiary or Diploma you have the opportunity to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Sport the following year if you have a) achieved and b) attended well. Alternatively, you may like to consider a career or apprenticeship within the sport and leisure industry.

Scholars who have progressed onto the Extended Diploma use the course to gain entry to Higher Education; with many going into careers in teaching, coaching, sports therapy, sports analysis, fitness or nutrition.
