Badra’s BMet Experience

BMet student’s passion for science and positive college experience inspires her transition into teaching

Science enthusiast, Badra Munir’s passion for science has seen her successfully transition from BMet student to BMet teacher of the innovative subject.

We asked Badra a series of questions to find out about her progressive experience in a subject area that she has always loved.

When, where and how did your BMet journey begin?

“I started at Matthew Boulton College in 2015 and continued here until 2019. I first embarked on ESOL courses and then did my BTEC Level 1 and 2 in science.

After passing with D*D*D*, I decided to do an Access to HE Science course, which I completed with 42 distinctions out of 45.”

Why did you choose to study your Science course ?… and tell me a bit about “your journey” prior to coming to studying at BMet…

“I came from Pakistan in 2015. I was doing science back home and was a bright student. However, I thought I wouldn’t be able to accomplish my dream of graduating in biology and becoming a biology lecturer because of the language barrier. Luckily, with the help of my parents and their support, I was able to start from the scratch and enrolled on the ESOL course and then carried on making my way up until I reached my dream.

“I always wanted to be a lecturer, as my mom was a teacher who helped thousands of young girls to get educated and made a significant difference in their lives. My mom always inspired me and growing up watching her made me realise this is what I want to do, where you can add value to the society by helping the new generation progress and succeed. Biology was my passion, so I decided to pursue my dreams.”

How have you found your time at BMet, and does/did it cater to your needs?

“BMet made me who I am today, I can never thank this organisation enough because it gave me the confidence, courage and the motivation to see and accomplish my dreams.

“I was a student who would sit in the corner quietly and wouldn’t involve myself or interact too much because of having a lack of confidence. However, I had amazing teachers in my life, who showed faith in me and always encouraged me and supported me to do well. It all because of their help that I have come this far, and they have made the biggest impact on my life.

“I am now back at BMet once again, but not as a student, but as a teacher because I want to give something back to BMet as it has made me who I am today. BMet change my life. I want to bring the same changes in people’s and help them succeed. I want to add to the values of BMet and I am willing to do anything I can to add a value to its success and name.”

Do you have anything else to say about the support you have received from BMet?

“I have received help from BMet in a great amount and without their help I would not be able to do what I am doing today. Not only educational but emotional support were provided, and I felt valued and part of the community.”

 

What have you particularly enjoyed during your time at BMet and what are your best experiences?

“My whole journey was an experience which is indescribable in words, but I met some lovely people in my life at BMet. BMet didn’t only made me who I am but gave me the opportunity to meet some good friends, who are part of my life and add a value to my life.

“I did my PGCE placement at BMet also, where I had the opportunity to learn and explore what teaching looks like in more depth.”

What are you doing now and what are your hopes for the future?

“I graduated as a human biologist from University of Birmingham in 2022 and today I am living my dream every day as a science lecturer.  While I was a full-time student, I was working as a supervisor full-time where my responsibility was to run a store in the absence of my manager. There were lot of hardships in my way, but my ambition, hard work and passion was much bigger and powerful hence why I am where I am today.

“I started working as a full-time biology lecturer at James watt and now I am a health and social care lecturer, which is very rewarding.”

What advice would you give to other students wanting to attend BMet? Or that are currently here?

“The best advice I can give is that hard work without consistency is nothing. To achieve your goals, you must be consistent and be focused.”

What would you say has been your favourite achievements/memories to date?

“I have a lot of favourite achievements and some of them are:

• Graduating as a Human Biologist
• Winning a HE Alumni award
• Completing my PGCE”
• Becoming a science lecturer.”
