Bird belly rub will bring luck on A Level results day
17 and 18 year-olds can rub the tummy of the college’s two The Big Hoot owls for good luck before finding out their final grades.
The owls will also be greeting students enrolling for courses starting in September at Matthew Boulton College and Sutton Coldfield College.
Anthony Dennant, Head of Matthew Boulton College: “In just two weeks, our owls have bought smiles to the faces of all our college visitors.
“Owls are seen as symbols of wisdom, protection and prophecy, so are ideal for sending positive vibes to people that are nervous about collecting their results or uncertain about how college study can help transform their lives.
“The owls will be another way for BMet to create a lovely atmosphere on A Level results day and through our enrolment. People can take celebratory photographs with the owls to symbolize what they have achieved or represent the start of a new learning journey.”
89 owls in total are ‘nesting’ in a variety of locations across Birmingham between now and September to help raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. People are encouraged to visit (and photograph) as many of them as possible.
The owl at Sutton Coldfield College, Lichfield Road, designed by student, Scarlett Byfield is inspired by the beauty of the town.
The 18-year-old said: “The aim of my owl design was to show what’s special about the town through different landmarks. It’s the first thing people see as they approach the campus, so it also shows why the college and the town are great places for people to study, socialise and progress to where they want to be.
“Hopefully people will have fun using the owl as a good luck charm whether they are collecting their results, joining or returning to the college like I will be in September to finish my art and design course.”
The owl at Matthew Boulton College, Jennens Road forms part of their We_Are_Feed (art and design courses) 10th anniversary celebrations.
Enrolment for September courses at BMet College begins on Monday 17 August.
