BMet Appoints New Chair of Corporation

BMet Principal and CEO Pat Carvalho has welcomed the appointment of Afzal Hussain as the new Chair of the Corporation.

Afzal takes over from Sir Dexter Hutt, who has provided invaluable leadership during his six-year tenure helping BMet to secure it’s Ofsted Good rating.

Afzal is an experienced senior leader with a strong track record in regeneration, community development, and social enterprise.

As Chief Officer at Witton Lodge Community Association, he has led impactful initiatives across housing, employment, and economic development, supporting thousands of residents in North Birmingham. His leadership has driven multi-million-pound regeneration projects, combining commercial acumen with a strong social purpose.

Afzal is also a Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands, playing an active role in promoting the region’s communities, institutions, and enterprises. He serves on several boards and has chaired key initiatives, including the Health Inequalities, Communities, and Economies Committee at Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board.

More recently Afzal has been appointed to the West Midlands Combined Authority’s new taskforce, launched by Mayor Richard Parker. The taskforce, made up of over 50 experts from housing, transport, economic, and skills sectors, will help shape policy and tackle key regional priorities.

Commenting on his appointment, Pat Carvalho said: “We are delighted to welcome Afzal as the new Chair of the Corporation.  His wealth of experience in strategic leadership, community regeneration, and economic development makes him the ideal person to support BMet in its next phase of growth.

“The Corporation was unanimous in its decision, and we look forward to working with Afzal to continue delivering high-quality education and opportunities for our students.”

Reflecting on his new role, Afzal Hussain said: “I am excited to be leading the board at BMet. The college plays a crucial role in supporting young people and adults across Birmingham.

“I look forward to working with governors, the senior team, and stakeholders to build on the strong foundations already in place. Together, we will continue to drive innovation, celebrate diversity, and ensure BMet makes a lasting impact on the city and wider region.

“Since joining the BMet Board in 2021, I have seen first-hand the college’s commitment to excellence, inclusion, and sustainability.

“While challenges remain, the ambition and dedication of the team are clear. As Chair, I am committed to helping BMet fulfil its potential as a bold and dynamic Further Education College that actively contributes to Birmingham’s economic growth, skills development, and social inclusion.”
