BMet students are benefiting from the launch of ground-breaking Digital Innovators Programme – set to empower SEND Learners, in partnership with Birmingham City Council
Birmingham, UK– Digital Innovators, funded by Birmingham City Council and in partnership seven leading schools, colleges and trusts, has this week launched its transformative SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) programme at BMet College.
Running from January to April 2025, this free initiative is set to empower 120 SEND learners by providing them with vital workplace skills, real-world experiences and the confidence to thrive in education and employment.
A Game-Changing Opportunity for SEND Learners
Led by experienced business professionals, the SEND programme is uniquely designed to bridge the gap between education and employment. By combining tailored workshops, mentorship opportunities and employer partnerships, the programme equips SEND learners with the skills and tools to unlock their full potential.
The SEND programme officially launched on 20 January 2025 at BMet’s Matthew Boulton College. It will then take place at BMet’s Sutton Coldfield College (w/c 27 January) and at James Watt College (w/c 3 February).
Helen Cooper, Director for Inclusive Support at BMet, expressed her enthusiasm for the SEND programme: “I am extremely enthusiastic about the Digital Innovators SEND programme and its strong alignment with BMet’s goals.
“This initiative resonates perfectly with our commitment to fostering innovation, enhancing digital literacy, and equipping our learners with the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
“For our learners, this programme provides an invaluable opportunity to build confidence, develop critical problem-solving abilities, and gain hands-on experience with employers.”
Programme Highlights and Impact
• 120 employability programme placements: Learners will gain the skills to thrive in the working world across 7 schools, colleges and trusts.
• 20-30 work experience placements: Learners will gain hands-on experience in real working environments, with the support of Birmingham City Council.
• Tailored workshops: Focus on employability skills such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking.
• Mentorship by business professionals: Providing learners with guidance, confidence, and practical career advice.
• Employer engagement: Local businesses are invited to offer programme support, placements and mentorship, helping to create inclusive workplaces for future learners.
This initiative addresses a significant need: currently, only 5.1% of adults with SEND in England secure sustained paid work. Digital Innovators and its partners seek to create lasting, positive change.
