BMet supports Learning Disability Week with captivating student experiences and journeys

BMet students’ inspiring life experiences and journeys will be highlighted during Mencap’s Learning Disability Week, from today (Monday 17th June) until Sunday 23rd June.

The theme for the special awareness date this year is “Do you see me?”, which is all about people with learning disabilities being seen, heard and valued.

The event is organised annually by learning disability charity, Mencap, via social media channels and as with other activities aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with learning disabilities.

As stated by Mencap: ““It is a time when we make sure the world hears what life is like if you have a learning disability. “Do you see me?” is about challenging the barriers people with a disability face. We want to celebrate the things that people with a disability bring to society.”

BMet is supporting Learning Disability Week with a variety of content that is specially designed to showcase the experiences of students with inclusive support needs, along with progressive activities taking place at the college.

Throughout the week, learners with learning disabilities, learning difficulties and who are neurodiverse will be able to “tell their stories” through a series of video and photographic content. Plus, there will be a video featuring members of the Sutton Coldfield Student Council speaking on the topic.

The important occasion will also be a chance for BMet to reinforce current innovative initiatives including an employer toolkit to support accessible apprenticeships and inclusive internships, an upcoming state of the art inclusive sports centre for Greater Birmingham and the impact of new sensory and art therapy areas at the college.

Speaking of the week, Sam Coles, Equality and Diversity Manager at BMet said: “We are so pleased to celebrate Learning Disability Week.

“It will be a chance to highlight the experiences of our students and staff who require additional support, by giving people a presence and voice to share their journeys. Plus, it will be an opportunity to showcase relevant activities, events and facilities that take place within our locations.”

Learning Disability Week is a great opportunity for BMet to celebrate the things people with a learning disability bring to society.

Furthermore, it will also be a chance to showcase student experiences, highlight successes and to give people a voice to share their personal stories.

Don’t forget to fully engage with us on our BMet social media channels for Learning Disability Week – hashtags are  #LearningDisabilityWeek, #LDWeek2024, #LDW24
