Football and hockey students score top honours
Football and hockey athletes took the top trophies at the 2018 BMet Sports Awards. Hockey player, Rob Hutchings and footballer, Sian Wilson were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year at a ceremony held at Aston Villa Football Club. The Sutton Coldfield Ability Counts football team received the award of Team of the Year.
“These top honours are fully deserved,” said Jason Allen, Department Manager. “Rob and Sian have shown all the qualities of an exceptional athlete. They’re excellent role models for anyone looking to combine their studies with sport or any other hobbies and interests that require a huge personal commitment.
“And the team award could not have gone to a more deserving group. They have been unbeaten all season and after becoming runners up in the 2017 Association of Colleges Sport competition, they went one better in April and were national champions.”
Jon Phillips, captain of the Ability Counts football team said: “It’s a great feeling to be holding this trophy because it’s come from the people that have supported us all the way. There are 14 of us and the team spirit is strong. It’s why we’ve done so well this year and will hopefully keep on being successful.”
400 students study sport, sports science and exercise science and represent fitness and sport academies across BMet.
Jason Allen, continued: “Our awards ceremony recognises the positive impact of sport across our college over the last 12 months. It also celebrates the achievements of our students, who have given 100% in the many competitions and events we have competed in, officiated at and been ambassadors for.
“The year ahead is bursting with potential. Our women’s football academy with Aston Villa Football Club takes off in September and our rugby and golf academy programmes are going from strength to strength. Bring on the new season!”
