James Watt College fair attracts 700 jobseekers

Head of James Watt College, Kim Vaughan said: “Jobseekers, potential apprentices and learners were able to find out about opportunities available now and in the future.

“Employers from the engineering, care, warehousing, public services, retail, hair and beauty and transport sectors had many vacancies to promote. This gave everyone that came much more confidence about their future career prospects.”

The Fair was organised by the Perry Barr District Jobs and Skills Partnership Board, which includes representatives from the college, the area's employers and Birmingham City Council's education and regeneration departments.

The Board's Chair, Councillor Narinder Kooner said: “Our priority has been to identify the skills that employers need and gaps in recruitment that this community can fill. The event at James Watt College is the second that the board has organised since we launched in September 2015.

“The fact that so many people attended shows just how important it is for us to hold events that tackle local unemployment head on.”

Employers at the Fair included National Express, Yodel, Premier Inn, Auctus Rail, the Army Reserve and Aston Manor Coaches.

Perry Barr MP, Khalid Mahmood who also supported the event added: “I'm so pleased that employers from all sectors had reached out to these jobseekers. It was also great that our local college, JobCentre Plus and the Partnership Board successfully bought everyone together.”
