Jobseekers fired up by training course
23 jobseekers completed the six-week programme which included English and maths skills and customer service training, with a specific focus on employment opportunities at WMFS. Participants attended a taster day at Handsworth Fire Station, gaining hands-on experience of what it is like to be a firefighter. They also received job search advice and guidance and interview technique training.
“The training programme was in response to a major recruitment drive just launched by the fire service for 60 new posts,” explained Roger Varley, employment relationship manager at the Department for Work and Pensions. “Reaching out to jobseekers was something the fire service was keen to do as this would boost the number of applications received from individuals with a range of skills and knowledge who were looking to train for new careers.”
Sarah Warnes, West Midlands Fire Service Area Commander said: “We’re very pleased to have had the opportunity to engage with a diverse group of individuals looking for their next career move. This was also an excellent opportunity for us to show the different ways the fire service supports and works with local communities.
“Having met the programme’s participants, I know that many of them overcame doubts about their abilities and thrived after coming out of their comfort zones. Completing this course means they are on the right path to success.”
BMet delivers a range of programmes for jobseekers matched to local vacancies in areas ranging from customer service to health and social care to construction.
Katie Owen, Skills Engagement Manager at BMet added: “This pilot programme has been a tremendous success because it has significantly boosted the confidence of these jobseekers, encouraging them to pursue roles they would not have considered before now. Many of them will make applications once recruitment opens at WMFS or will work towards gaining further qualifications to boost their chances of working for the fire service in future.”
