Made up by former student’s Oscar glory

Winston won it for a former Sutton Coldfield College student. The Oscar for make-up and hairstyling went to talented artist, David Malinowski who transformed best actor winner, Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill for the movie, The Darkest Hour.

“We’re all ‘made up’ by David’s success and send him our congratulations!” said Mustafa Shevket, Head of Sutton Coldfield College. “He studied film and video techniques with us from 1996-7 and has since thrived as a special effects make-up artist with a CV listing an array of Hollywood projects.

He continued: “We established our own art and design course for theatre, film and TV in 2014 because of the national and international demand for these skills. The next generation of showbiz hair and make-up artists, including prosthetics and wig makers, plus set designers and prop makers are being trained here as we speak.

“And with David to look up to, hopefully it won’t be too long before we see another of our students making a real name for themselves and walking up the red carpet.”

David has created work for Madame Tussauds as well as been involved in films including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and X-Men: First Class plus the television shows Downton Abbey and Doctor Who.

He is now based in Aylesbury where he runs make-up and special effects company, ATD Creations.
