Prince’s Trust learners dig in for local housing association
The 15 learners at James Watt College spent a fortnight at Spring Housing Association in Handsworth producing a garden space with flowerbeds and plants. They also made wooden flower troughs and painted an inspirational mural.
Team Leader, Fateha Begum said: “There hadn’t been a real garden here before, so the learners have done some amazing work putting everything together from scratch. The project is linked to their personal development programme which encourages them make a difference in their community. This has been a fantastic way for them to do this.”
The learners raised £112 to purchase plants and compost for the project. Donations of a lawn mower, paint and wood also came from Travis Perkins, Dulux and Great Barr Sawmills.
Raj Shergill, Director of Housing and Corporate Services at Spring Housing Association added: “It’s wonderful that our clients can benefit this lovely new garden.
“We’re grateful to The Prince’s Trust learners for choosing to support their community in this way. They showed a real dedication to every task they took on and have created a lasting legacy that people can enjoy long into our organisation’s future.”
The Team programme helps young people get the skills and confidence to change their lives. Young people get involved in team building activities, a week-long residential trip, a community project and two weeks of work experience during the course. They also get advice on how to write CVs as well as gaining nationally recognised qualifications.
Three in four young people supported by The Prince’s Trust move into work, education or training.
