Sutton Coldfield College students work to be showcased at leading arts exhibition in London

The creative talents of three of BMet’s Sutton Coldfield College students will be on full display at a prestigious London arts exhibition this month.

Josh, Tom and Ellie, who are studying art and design at the college, have been selected to have their artwork featured at Origins Creatives – organised by the University Arts London (UAL) Awarding Body.

Held at the Truman Brewery in Shoreditch, the showcase will feature pieces from some of the UK’s most talented students at FE institutions studying across UAL subject areas – including art and design, fashion, creative media and performing arts.

Celebrating students’ creativity and hard work will certainly be high on the agenda at the free exhibition, that will encompass a diverse range of painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, fashion and more.

Being part of the unique opportunity, will also provide BMet’s scholars with the opportunity to have their works seen by hundreds of art lovers in a popular public arena.

Each of the students were able to choose their own area of passion and specialism to express themselves through art. All of their pieces caught the attention of UAL Awarding Body’s curator from nearly 500 submissions.

Josh’s submission, titled “Sci-Fi Scenario”, explores the theme of nature vs manmade. He created a sculptural piece focusing on the theme from an outer space concept, using different concepts and ideas relating to mechanical creatures versus plants – including environmental and sustainability issues embedded in the final major project theme.

Josh who has a personal love of Science Fiction said: “I didn’t have to think twice about the focus for my artwork and am pleased that I was able to express myself on something that means a lot to me!

“People often overlook Sci Fi, so I also I feel that my art was a good way of raising awareness about the subject area.”

Ellie’s submission entitled “Crime Scene”, explores crime under the theme of nature versus nurture. She wrote her own crime story, involving family members to act out roles and create pieces as evidence. Her crime scene board concludes her investigation into a serial murder.

For inspiration, Ellie looked at serial killers and how they could be pre-disposed by their genetic heritage – as her interest was to create an evidence board for a crime scene she made. She formulated a back story for her crime board, building her own crime using information she gained from her research.

Ellie, who wants to join the police said: “I chose to focus my artwork on crime, as I am very passionate about this area and have had personal experiences myself.

“My family mean the world to me, so it was also important to me to be able to include them visually in my work.”

Tom’s submission, titled “Heritage”, explores his own British heritage in the Platinum Jubilee year. Through his work, he showed images of Britain that are iconic including visual depictions of tea, structures like Tower Bridge and a British telephone box. In addition, Tom used the Union Jack as a backdrop to showcase what heritage his work is based on.

Tom added: “I thought it was really great to be involved in the project, as I got to explore the complexities of people’s lives, which included delving into histories and cultures.

“I focused on Britain, as my family are born in Britain, so I was able to relate through my own and shared experiences.”

The unique Origins Creatives exhibition provides art lovers, critics and industry professionals from the creative sector with the opportunity to discover original creative talent from across the UK, celebrating students’ creativity and hard work.

Speaking of the students’ great opportunity and success, Julie Hickman, art and design lecturer at Sutton Coldfield College said: “I am so very proud of my students whose consistent dedication, enthusiasm and hard work towards their course work has certainly paid off. They have not only represented the college well, but also themselves.

“Opportunities like this don’t often come along, so it is a milestone moment to be able to showcase their ideas, interests and talents on such a huge public scale!”

The exhibition will showcase selected work created by students from Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 across all subject areas. You can expect to see a diverse range of painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, fashion and more.
