Macy’s BMet Experience

Macy is setting new heights of success on her BMet travel and tourism course

The sky seems to be the limit for hardworking travel and tourism student, Macy, who is currently studying at Sutton Coldfield College.

Macy is flying high since she started studying a Level 3 Foundation Diploma before advancing on to an extended diploma in her second year.

Since starting at the college, Macy has benefited from excellent support from teachers and has had the opportunity to take part in and enjoy lots of different experiences.

We asked Macy a few questions to find out more about her personal story so far:

Why did you choose to study the course?… and tell me a bit about “your journey” prior to coming to studying at BMet…

“The reason I chose to study travel and tourism at college is because I’ve always wanted to travel, learn about new cultures and the history that comes along with ancient landmarks and famous tourist hotspots.

“Working in an industry that allows me to experience this is so rewarding. My interest in the subject developed when studying tourism alongside my GCSEs in year 11, as well as hearing stories about my uncle’s travels while working on cruise ships.

“Studying travel and tourism at college has solidified my career goals to work in the tourism industry, as well as go on to university.”

How have you found your time at BMet and does it cater to your needs?

“The freedom of being responsible for myself and my assignments at college has helped me to become a more independent and resilient person.

“Level 3 travel and tourism has allowed me to build on my knowledge and has prepared me to go on to the next stage in my education.”

What do you think of the support that you’ve received at BMet?

“I think the frequent feedback and support from my tutors has been really helpful and beneficial to my assignment work, as well as my progression on the course.

“I always know what I am doing well and how I can improve. as they are always there to help when I need it.

“I also appreciate that my tutor is always open to suggestions as to how lessons can be improved and constructed in a way that is useful to all students.”

What have you particularly enjoyed during your time at BMet and what are your best experiences?

“My favourite experiences at college have been the trips to Disneyland Paris and Manchester Airport, as well as various guest speakers from the industry invited to speak to us and share their knowledge.”

What are your hopes for the future?

“After my time at college, I plan to go onto studying International Tourism Management at university.

“In the future, I hope to become fluent in Spanish and work in the tourism industry in Spain.”

What advice would you give to other students?

“Probably to not be afraid to ask for help if you’re struggling at college with work or any other issues, as in my experience, tutors are always there to help and provide support.”

What would you say have been your favourite achievements/memories to date?

“What I am most proud of throughout my time studying tourism at college is my research project on ‘the rise of female solo travel.’

“In the assignment, I analysed the reasons behind why most solo travellers are women. I also evaluated the key motivations women have for choosing to travel by themselves. To conclude my answers, I used my own primary research – a questionnaire that I developed and sent to women of all ages about solo travel.

“As part of the research project, I also interviewed an experienced female solo traveller about her experiences travelling alone. A large part of my findings involved the increase in women’s rights globally over the past 50 years, which is something I feel very passionately about.

“Another achievement I am proud of is achieving a grade 4 maths in the summer of my first year.”
