College Open Event includes student sleepover for charity
The uniformed services students will swap comfy beds for cardboard boxes and take shelter in the college’s car park from 8pm until 8am the following morning.
The sponsorship funds they raise will be donated to local charity, SIFA Fireside to support local people experiencing homelessness, or who are vulnerably-housed.
“Our sleep out has been motivated by the fact that 10% of those that are homeless in the UK are ex-armed forces personnel,” explained Lecturer, Glyn Price. “The students are keen to do something to reach out those in this difficult position.
“The money we raise will buy sleeping bags. We’ve also organised a food and clothing bank in college for students and staff to make donations.
“On the Open Event itself, the students will be raising awareness of the work of SIFA Fireside while talking to visitors about some of the other activities they have been involved in during their course.”
SIFA Fireside provides practical support includingdaily drop-ins, aresettlement service and anemploymentand training programme to those in need of help.
Sutton Coldfield College’s Open Event includes opportunities to tour the college, meet staff and students and take part in a range of practical activities. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to beat the queues by registering here.
